Cyclone Nanauk to hit Oman coast on Sunday
14062014
Going by the US Joint Typhoon Warning Center s given name of 02A, the cyclone is currently lingering in the Arabian Sea with an estimated speed of 70 to 90kmph, Arab News reported.
According to the UAE’s National Centre of Meteorology and Seismology, by Wednesday afternoon the tropical cyclone was some 960km southeast of the Masirah Island of Oman.
It would move and intensify further in the center of Arabian Sea on June 12 and 13, said the center.
The storm, Oman’s Met Office said is expected to move northwestward and make landfall in Oman between Ras Al Hadd and Ras Madrakah on June 15. Nanauk will intensify further in the center of the Arabian Sea but it is expected to weaken before approaching the coast of Oman. With wind speed reaching 30 35 knots per hour the storm is expected to bring in 100-300mm rainfall in 24 hours all over the Sultanate, a senior Omani official said, adding the height of the sea waves may reach four meters.
The impact of cyclone is expected from Saturday to Monday. Heavy rains and high speed winds are expected to lash North and South Sharqiyah Al Wusta and Muscat governorates. The rapid intensification of the storm was expected given the conducive environment at the sea as well as in the atmosphere.

Ukraine plane shot down
14062014
LUGANSK: Pro-Russian gunmen shot down a Ukranian military transport plane Saturday in the separatist east, killing all 49 people on board in the biggest single loss of life in the two-month insurgency.
The early morning downing near the airport of the rebel stronghold city of Lugansk came a day after Ukrainian forces notched their biggest success of their deadly campaign to reunify the splintered nation by reclaiming control of a strategic southeastern industrial port.
The United States on Friday accused Russia of helping in the insurgency by sending tanks and rocket launchers to the pro-Moscow rebels, a charge denied by the Kremlin.
Closed-circuit camera footage of the downing showed a small flash flare in the sky when the large Il-76 plane was hit by what Ukrainian officials said was heavy-calibre machinegun fire. A massive second burst of light lit up the horizon when the plane apparently exploded upon hitting the ground while approaching the Lugansk airport.
“The terrorists cynically and treacherously fired with a large-calibre machinegun hitting an Ilyushin-76 of the Ukrainian air force which was carrying troops on rotation and was about to land at Lugansk airport,” the ministry said in a statement.
A spokesman for Ukraine´s self-proclaimed “anti-terrorist operation” said the plane was carrying nine crew members and 40 paratroopers. “They all died,” spokesman Vladyslav Seleznyov told AFP by telephone. The four-engine jet was also carrying military equipment.
An AFP correspondent heard heavy fighting and a series of loud explosions in the hours preceding the downing in Lugansk, a city of 400,000 lying just 25 kilometres (15 miles) west of the Russian border.
The city has been under effective rebel control since the eastern uprising began in early April, but Ukrainian forces had managed to hold on to its airport and use it to rotate troops serving in the campaign. But they have been forced to repel an increasingly frequent series of raids on the air hub by the gunmen, who had also briefly seized the main international airport in the neighbouring rebel-held city of Donetsk at the end of May.
The two-month insurgency is now known to have claimed at least 320 lives of civilians and fighters on both sides.
The United States on Friday accused Russia of sending tanks and rocket launchers to the rebels in the wake of Western-backed tycoon Petro Poroshenko´s victory in May 25 presidential elections. “We are highly concerned by new Russian efforts to support the separatists,” deputy spokeswoman Marie Harf said.
Poroshenko had told his Russian counterpart Vladimir Putin on Thursday that the tanks´ crossing into Ukraine was “unacceptable”. Russia called the tanks reports “disinformation”, but Washington backed Kiev´s claims, saying that the separatists had also obtained multiple rocket launchers from Russia among other heavy weapons and military equipment.
NATO chief Anders Fogh Rasmussen warned that reports of pro-Russian groups acquiring heavy weapons from Russia, including tanks, would mark a “serious escalation” of the crisis if confirmed.
Poroshenko had on Friday celebrated the “heroism” of soldiers hoisting the national flag over the strategic rebel-held port of Mariupol. He proclaimed the industrial Sea of Azov city the new temporary capital of Donetsk — an eastern rustbelt region overrun by pro-Russian gunmen for the past two months. Mariupol has wavered between rebel and Kiev control for weeks and was also the scene of pitched battles on May 9 that killed more than a dozen people.
Poroshenko´s troubles have been compounded by the threat of Ukraine being cut off from economically-vital Russian gas shipments as early as Monday morning because of a bitter price dispute.
Prime Minister Arseniy Yatsenyuk told regional administrations and the heads of the state energy company to prepare for the consequences of a possible gas cut by implementing a plan for reduced energy use.
Ukraine receives half its gas supplies from Russia and transports 15 percent of the fuel consumed in Europe. The head of Ukraine´s state energy firm said Kiev was ready to make a $1.95-billion (1.45-billion-euro) payment demanded by Moscow by Monday if Russia settled on a price of $326 per 1,000 cubic metres of gas.
European Commission chief Jose Manuel Barroso meanwhile told the Russian leader he was willing to include Moscow in discussions with Kiev weeks before the EU is due to sign an association accord and free trade pact with the former Soviet state.

Chinese envoy rebuts Vietnamese, Philippine over South China Sea
14062014A Chinese envoy on Friday forcefully refuted accusations made by Vietnam and the Philippines against China over the South China Sea situation, holding the two countries responsible for any disputes.
At the meeting of state parties to the United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea (UNCLOS) held here, Wang Min, China’s deputy permanent representative to the United Nations, slammed Vietname and the Philippines for infringing upon Chinese territory.
Wang said that on May 2, a Chinese company’s HYSY 981 drilling rig started its drilling operation inside the contiguous zone of China’s Xisha Islands for oil and gas exploration. Vietnam sent a large number of vessels, including armed ones, to the site, illegally and forcefully disrupting the Chinese operation for over 1,400 times so far.
“What Vietnam did seriously infringed upon China’s sovereignty, sovereign rights and jurisdiction, grossly violated relevant international laws, including the UNCLOS, undermined the freedom and safety of navigation in the related waters, and damaged regional peace and stability,” said Wang, who also heads the Chinese delegation to the meeting.
In mid-May, with the connivance of the Vietnamese government, thousands of Vietnamese outlaws committed sabotage against foreign companies, including Chinese ones, in Vietnam, brutally killing four Chinese nationals, injuring over 300 others and causing heavy property losses, Wang added.
“Till now, Vietnam still has not responded to our legitimate demand,” he noted.
The envoy pointed out that lies can never eclipse truth, nor can publicity stunts provide a legal cloak for illegal actions.
“What Vietnam needs to do now is to respect China’s sovereignty, sovereign rights and jurisdiction, immediately stop all forms of disruptions of the Chinese operation and withdraw all vessels and personnel from the site, so as to ease the tension and restore tranquility on the sea as early as possible,” Wang said.
He reiterated that Xisha Islands are an inherent part of China’s territory, and are under effective jurisdiction of the Chinese government.
“There’s no dispute about them,” he said, pointing to the fact that all the successive Vietnamese governments prior to 1974 had formally acknowledged Xisha islands as part of China’s territory since ancient times.
“Now the Vietnamese government is going back on its word and making territorial claims over China’s Xisha Islands,” Wang said, noting that Vietnam is reneging on its own promises, saying one thing today and denying it tomorrow.
“Our ancestors told us, trustworthiness is of paramount importance in state-to-state relations,” he quoted.
“We would like to ask: how could Vietnam be trusted by the international community and how could Vietnam’s international commitments be taken seriously in the future?” Wang said, referring to Vietnam’s action as a violation of estoppel, a basic principle in the international law.
With regard to all the false accusations made by the Philippines against China, Wang pointed out the root cause of the disputes between China and the Philippines in the South China Sea is the Philippines’ illegal occupation of some islands and reefs belonging to China’s Nansha islands.
“The Philippines attempts to legalize its infringements and provocations by dragging China into arbitral proceedings,” he said. “The Philippines is also trying to win international sympathy and support through deception. This is what the problem is in essence.”
The ambassador noted that pursuant to the provisions of UNCLOS, the Chinese government made a declaration in 2006, excluding disputes over maritime delimitation and territorial sovereignty from compulsory dispute settlement procedures.
“As a sovereign state and a state party to UNCLOS, China has the right under international law to do this. China does not accept the arbitration initiated by the Philippines,” Wang said, stressing that China’s position based on the provisions of the international law will not change.
“China appreciates the efforts made by the majority of ASEAN countries to preserve regional peace and stability,” he said. “We will continue working with ASEAN countries to strictly act on the DOC (the Declaration on the Conduct of Parties in the South China Sea), promote practical cooperation, enhance mutual trust and jointly uphold peace and stability in the South China Sea.”
