Mr Sagar
At the Data Center World session held at Las Vegas, GreenField Software founder Shekhar Dasgupta presented new measures for greener Data Centers.
The new set of measures presented by Mr Dasgupta go well beyond raising efficiency of IT infrastructure paving the way for leaner and greener Data Centers. These measures could improve performance and revenue besides reducing costs and environmental impact. Data Centers are home to mission critical applications and data.
GreenField Software is an entrepreneurial venture set up in 2012 by Dasgupta, a technology leader who earned his PGDM with specialization Environment studies, led Oracle India as its Managing Director between 1998 and 2005.
Here are more details for your consideration for your possible use.

GreenField Software founder Shekhar Dasgupta unveils measures for greener Data Centers
Presents new measures at the Data Center global meet
New Delhi May 8, 2014
Data Center technologies expert and GreenField Software founder Mr Shekhar Dasgupta has presented a new set of measures that go well beyond raising efficiency of IT infrastructure paving the way for leaner and greener Data Centers. These measures could improve performance and revenue besides reducing costs and environmental impact. Data Centers are home to mission critical applications and data.
Speaking at the Data Center World meet in Las Vegas Friday, Mr Dasgupta dispelled the myth among CIOs that they were responsible only for IT infrastructure. He urged the Chief Information Officers (CIOs) to treat power, space, cooling and networks as an integral part of Data Center.
Data Centers are designed to be fail-safe with multi level back up in power, computers, networks and air-conditioning virtually turning them to be energy guzzlers. It is estimated that data centers consume over 2 per cent of utility-produced electrical power in the United States and European Union.
A new breed of Multi-Tenant Data Centers, set up to address the Cloud infrastructure environment, together with tens of thousands captive data centers is leading to an unprecedented 15 per cent power consumption each year,Mr Dasgupta said. As large consumers of power CIOs have a role in mitigating risks to the environment.
Mr Dasgupta expanded on eBay’s Digital Services Efficiency (DSE) framework for Data Centers that works well with Data Center Infrastructure Management (DCIM) Software. This alone, he said, could lead to improved operational efficiencies and optimization of power, space, cooling, networks and IT infrastructure requirements in a Data Center and mitigate environmental impact.
Mr Dasgupta’s framework also proposes to measure IT efficiencies for each operations person in a Data Center–Data Center Managers, Infrastructure and Operations staff and IT staff–that would be unveiled in the next-generation DCIM software for achieving high availability in a leaner and greener Data Center.
Just as Balanced Scorecards had a profound impact on driving overall economic value of enterprises that use them, Mr Dasgupta suggested that Data Centers can be better aligned with business goals through Scorecard-based Data Center Infrastructure Management software. Absence of monitoring and lack of proper measurements or key performance indicators (KPIs) are the principal causal factors of Data Center failures, inefficiencies and wastage.
Held each year in Las Vegas, Data Center World is the premier global meet for data center managers. The global meet drew upon the knowledge and experience of global experts to offer real solutions for data centers.
High power consumption in Data Centers could be controlled through better Capacity Planning and reducing over-provisioning without impacting availability goals. It is now well established that poor design and absence or lack of good Capacity Planning are the main causes of wasted capital expenditure, higher power and cooling costs as well as increased space use. Even though most servers and other equipment come with vendor-provided power-saving techniques, Data Centres run up huge power bills as a result of either poor design or lack of Capacity Planning, he added.
Rising power consumption compounded with escalating energy prices, makes it important to measure and manage power use through Building Management Systems and DCIM software.
About GreenField Software
GreenField Software, best known for GFS Crane DCIM Software, an ERP for Data Centres, also offers DCIM-enabled advisory services to data centres.
The GFS Crane software tracks and analyzes entire power chain from DG Sets to Power Distribution Units, right up to virtual servers hosting the applications through a single console. GFS Crane is a complete ERP for the Data Center: allocating and optimizing the key resources of a Data Center – power, space, cooling and networks.
GreenField Software counts amongst its customers an Oil and Gas major; a large private sector bank; a respected print, online and television media house; an integrated power generation and distribution utility and an infrastructure finance player. GreenField Software has created a new delivery model using cloud infrastructure for managed DCIM services.

Four activists in Mahan were arrested and put in jail

9052014
Brikesh Singh, Greenpeace India
To Me

May 8 at 7:12 PM
Hi Naresh,

At 12.05 hrs this morning, four activists in Mahan were arrested and put in jail. Akshay Gupta, Vinit Gupta, Bechan Lal Shah and Vijay Shankar Singh, were neither told what their crime is not where they were being taken. They now await trial.
All because they chose to stand up against the company that wants to chop down over 5,00,000 trees and displace thousands of villagers in Mahan. Essar, the lead partner in this company, has made several attempts to gag support for Mahan’s forests in the past. But it hasn’t worked.
Treating those four activists as criminals is like treating all of us who stand for forests as criminals. We can’t let this happen. Let’s tell the company that support for forests will not be stifled.
Ask Essar to commit to oppose the arrest of activists for protesting peacefully.

Showing the company that support for Mahan’s forests spreads beyond the villages, will help make them cautious of their reputation.  They need to know that there are lakhs of us who know of their intention and they can’t continue with their slimy ways.
After hours of their arrest, we finally found out that they’ve been booked under four charges including robbery. Robbery? Yeah, we know how ridiculous these charges are. But that’s not all. One of our activists reports that he was beaten up by the police when he refused to sign a confession.
Earlier this week, people in Mahan prevented company officials from demarcating trees in the forest. And now four of them are under arrest. The movement to protect Mahan’s forests continues. Let’s show this to the company who wants to destroy it.
Thanks,

The Election Commission of India and its rendezvous with Elections 2014

9052014
Manu Sharma,
New Delhi” May 10,2014, The stone thrower and the intended victim are both party to the incident as one of them is surely the true victim for reasons best known to them and erring in the public eye. The offender might use the media to highlight himself as the victim in the public eye and the punisher to stand in prejudiced controversy or vice versa. The truth is they both gain something by coming into the limelight.
The same holds true for both EC and its actions against its political offenders in the public eye. The more it involves itself in taking action against them, the more it holds itself to fall victim to unwarranted uncalled for controversies sadly none of them of its making  or liking hence endangering itself to end up as the sole victim in the public eye, with both the offender and the victim garnering political gains in the  melee.
Has the respect and admiration of ECI taken a severe beating because of the overabundance of avowal against it by leading politicians becoming acerbic across party lines of late? The question here is the Honorable Election Commission of India being used for political gains or electorate mileage by the all and mighty political bigwigs for their own vested interests? Can it come out unscathed maintaining its sheen of character and reliability out of all the recent political humdrum? Does it need to take drastic steps against offenders to pass the public’s ‘Agni Pariksha’ to maintain its reverential image?
I do remember my civics lesson in junior school when The Election Commission of India was inculcated in our psyche as the most powerful and dignified entity of all, safe guarding the dignity and morality of our democracy by holding free and fair elections in our country with infinite stupendous powers and immunity over anything to everything during elections. We truly believed and still believe and conjecture both in awe and admiration of its  upholding the true spirit of our democracy alongside the four pillars of our constitution the Executive (Government), Legislature (Parliament & State Assemblies, etc), Judiciary (Supreme Court, High Court & Other Judicial centers) and of course our stalwart Media.
It seems the Political fraternity is reaping hay in blaming each other and using the lenience, moderation and high ethics of the honorable EC for their own political gains, they mistakenly are taking its silence as precursory to general weakness, which I consider to be completely off beam on their part. One can say that they are using the Media too in this game of controversies to catch the public eye but Media has to do what it knows best and that is ‘Report’ without being prejudicially biast. These political games are taking its toll by tarnishing the ECI’s image in the public eye.
The EC has to stand out by taking tough decisions and correct actions to safeguard itself and the spirit of democracy which we all hold so true in our mindsets and heart.  Any blot on its sheen would surely damage its image in the eyes of a billion odd people. Conceivably, for the first time in the history of Lok Sabha elections, politicians have challenged the commission to act against them. This audacity also displays many politicians completely and blatantly disregarding ECI dictates. It’s no secret that The ECI can take drastic action against all its offenders but there might be other reasons for its mild attitude towards such political abuse. The election of 2014 has a gigantic outlook and its periphery of duties, responsibilities and demography are just too  mammoth in proportions to be managed properly and effectively by it in order to conduct fair and free elections in the country. Even though EC is unsparing in its efforts, resources and temperament and fully concentrating all its energies in giving the above to the people of India. Though given all  its powers and vigilance the EC cannot be expected to look into trifling affairs or to find needles in the haystack as controversies, blame games, false reporting and complaints  run a havoc and are galore in catching the public eye through the media during election time and needless to say this happens every time during elections. In such a huge game of election its fair enough and understandable that small matters end up big and many tend go unreported but those which are of serious nature should not be left lacking strict action.
It is astonishing that the ECI’s Model Code of Conduct has bought about many leaders under its net for violations in the ongoing polls. The list includes the names of the high and mighty political bigwigs like Narendra Modi, Parkash Singh Badal, Mulayam Singh Yadav, Sharad Pawar, Beni Prasad Verma etc. However, no one has faced any stern action so far. In most of the cases, the commission has let them go free with only a warning and this is what is actually acting as a stye in the public’s eye and many of the political juggernauts who want to use it as a weapon of sorts against their opponents. This ostensible game of hypocrisy and leniency to reasons known best to EC is somehow earning it a bad name. Now EC is in a quandary because strict vehement action against a populist leader is subject to public ire and of posing a grave danger to the security of the nation. Even though such violators of ECI model code of conduct do needs an exemplary scapegoat but of what stature or proportion is the million-dollar question? Let us consider Mr. Modi’s direct challenge to EC in holding a rally in Varanasi, which the EC had imposed a ban upon. What action should EC take? EC can and should thwart the rally by holding a limited curfew and deploying any number of paramilitary or military forces to snub the rally and maybe holding Mr. Modi in safe judicial custody for a day or two until the elections are over. However, a stricter action like cancellation of his candidature or a lawful punishment would not go down well with the public as he is being considered the prime ministerial candidate by a large section of the public. It is actually also prime duty of the EC to safeguard the candidates from any harm least of all from itself.
Clarity and transparency of EC’s actions also matter. For example, ECI in April barred BJP’s Amit Shah and SP’s Azam Khan from UP public rallies. But within a week of its decision, its poll panel revoked only Shah’s ban and not Azam Khan’s leaving the gates open for further controversy and mudslinging by a section of the public in favor of Azam Khan, even though EC was right in taking necessary action to avoid a piquant law and order situation in the sensitive region.
There are other instances where strict disciplinary action is sought after by the public as a onetime exemplary measure for keeping the EC’s Model Code of Conduct intact with all veneration. Listed below are some examples where EC has acted quite leniently and could have made example of its use of limitless powers to gain back its prestige in the eyes of all its critics:
Recently in May  HP State BJP president Satpal Singh Satti, complained to EC in the assembly segment ahead of polling for Hamirpur Lok Sabha seat accusing State Industries Minister Mukesh Agnihotri representing the Haroli constituency of flexing money, muscle power and affecting the working of the police to benefit his party’s prospects in elections. Though, EC only increased the security forces but still it could have gone a step further by taking some other action to maintain its image.
In another instance many political parties ended up  taking jibes at each other at the cost of EC’ s leniency to catch the public eye through the media. Like the JD(U) President Sharad Yadav criticizing  Mr. Modi for questioning the Election Commission. With TMC also  following suite with its bag full of woes against Mr. Mr. Modi to the ECI. TMC complained to EC against Mr. Modi for violating poll code by  seeking votes in the name of religion as In Asansole. TMC also brought forth  Mr. Modi’s  accusing the EC of acting impartially in the wake of BJP’s complaints of booth rigging in West Bengal, Bihar and western Uttar Pradesh and daring it to take action against him though his  party later claimed it to be nothing more than a mere suggestion from him. TMC also complaint to EC against live telecast of speeches of course once again its missile aimed at BJP.
The The Congress claim of the Gujarat Police trying to “hush up” the case registered against Narendra Modi in an FIR on April 30 for poll code violation and urged the Election Commission to transfer the case to an agency outside the state. The Faizabad scenario where EC sought report on Mr. Modi’s speech where he invoked Lord Ram from the district authorities. The UP attorney journals confusion against EC for favoring BJP. AAP complaint to EC regarding Mr. Modi’s marital status and the Congress backing it up. Massive cash seizures by EC show the involvement of Black Money in Polls.. The tussle, bustle and hustle between BJP’ Smriti Irani and Congress Priyanka Vadra’s PA in Amethi. The EC rejecting AAP booth capturing and massive rigging complaint in Amethi including that of Rahul Gandhi visiting poll booths. The Army Chief naming controversy. The after 10 Pm canvassing by candidate’s clearance to Madras HC by EC. The Election Commission letting off former Jharkhand Chief Minister Babulal Marandi with a “warning” for support of pastors and bishops of various churches in Dumka  to support him and his party in the Lok Sabha elections. These are cases, which the Media has highlighted, and I bet there are more such incidents, which has escaped the Media’s attention and can be successfully used by ECI to set exemplary punishment for future election activities. The malignment of each other during political rallies and in speeches by the various leaders belonging to various political parties has broken a record of sorts during the current election.
Well The Election Commission of India certainly has to set an example by punishing some of the offenders to showcase and safeguard its integrity as a powerful institution in front of the electorate of India that it can chew more than it can bite and anyone flouting its rules and MCC is out for a hard time.

HP Unlocks Power of Digital Printing for Packaging Industry at interpack 2014

News Advisory
HP Unlocks Power of Digital Printing for Packaging Industry at interpack 2014
New HP Indigo and Scitex solutions help converters and manufacturers transition to on-demand, versioned packaging

India, May 9, 2014 — Today at interpack 2014, HP announced the expansion of its Graphics Solutions portfolio, opening the door to the corrugated, flexible-packaging and folding-carton markets previously not addressed by digital printing technologies.

An $11 billion market opportunity, the packaging industry has been traditionally ruled by analog printing equipment, with only 7 percent of these materials currently printed with digital technology.(1) However, shorter product life cycles, demand for faster time to market and a decline in average run length are accelerating the need for digital print. Furthermore, brand owners are seeking the versioning, short runs and reduced environmental impact(2) that are only available with digital printing technology.

To help packaging converters and manufacturers take advantage of the digital opportunity, HP is introducing the HP Scitex 15000 Corrugated Press for production of corrugated displays and short-run packaging. HP also announced general availability and a new lamination partner for its HP Indigo 20000 and 30000 Digital Presses.

“After leading the shift to digital in label printing, HP is again driving an unstoppable analog-to-digital transformation in the package printing industry,” said Gido van Praag, vice president and general manager, Graphics Solutions Business, HP Asia Pacific and Japan. “With HP solutions, packaging converters can capture the benefits of digital printing to diversify business models, reach new customers and explore new profit areas.”

HP Scitex 15000 automates corrugated application production
The HP Scitex 15000 Corrugated Press simplifies and streamlines corrugated printing on an industrial scale. With the new large-format digital press—expected to be available Nov. 1(3) —converters and display makers can print direct to corrugated media as well as add short-run and versioning capabilities to their existing flexographic or lithographic-lamination operations. The press features:
·    HP Scitex High Dynamic Range (HDR) Printing Technology, enabling a unique combination of high-quality output at industrial volumes.
·    Easy setup and operation as well as speeds up to 600 m2/hour (6,456 ft2/hour), helping to maximize productivity.
·    An integrated automatic media loader that handles up to four media stacks side by side, optimized for use with corrugated sheets without operator intervention.
·    HP HDR240 Scitex Inks, which are GREENGUARD GOLDSM Certified and meet AgBB criteria,(4) making them ideal for indoor point-of-purchase displays, bulk bins and freestanding display units.

HP Indigo 20000 and 30000 forge packaging market transformation
HP is extending its digital expertise to packaging after establishing a leadership position in pressure-sensitive labels, printing more than 24 billion labels in 2013(5) using digital presses like the HP Indigo WS6600 series.

At drupa 2012, HP unveiled the 30-inch-wide Indigo 20000 and 30000 Digital Presses, designed to transform the label, flexible packaging and folding carton markets with wider-format production digital presses. The presses are successfully operating at six customer sites and are shipping this quarter to meet demand from leading packaging printers and converters worldwide, including:
·    California-based Emerald Packaging has signed an agreement to install the first HP Indigo 20000 Digital Press for flexible packaging in North America, allowing the company to enter the snack food, candy, health care and cosmetics markets.
·    Netherlands-based Flach Packaging, a producer of folding cartons, labels and disposables, will be an early customer for the HP Indigo 30000 Digital Press, expanding its ability to deliver high-quality folding cartons with a quick turnaround.

“The HP Indigo 20000 will bring a speed-to-market advantage as well as the ability to offer customized short runs, which will be important differentiators for us,” said Kevin Kelly, chief executive officer, Emerald Packaging. “No other manufacturer is close when it comes to offering a digital press for flexible packaging, especially for use with food products.”

Extending its end-to-end packaging solution partner network, HP also announced an agreement with Comexi Group, a leading flexible packaging machinery manufacturer, to develop a dedicated lamination solution. Optimized for the HP Indigo 20000 Digital Press, the Comexi NEXUS L20000 will offer advanced solvent-free lamination, delivering shorter time to market with reduced waste and environmental impact.

HP Inkjet Web Press solutions for growing packaging segment
HP also intends to enter the growing packaging segment with its inkjet web press solutions. HP Inkjet Web Presses, built upon proven HP Scalable Thermal Inkjet Technology, have delivered innovation and business transformation in other segments, including publishing, production mail and commercial print.

HP is developing new solutions configured for packaging that will help converters produce cost-effective short to medium runs and digital customization, deliver faster turnaround times and reduce inventory at industry-leading production speeds of up to 12,000 m2 per hour.(6)HP is working with leading packaging converters to validate the technology in terms of quality, flexibility and economics. As an example, HP is conducting trials with its own consumer printer boxes using this technology.

HP SPS thermal inkjet reaches more package coding applications
The HP 45si print cartridge and HP Black 2580 Solvent Ink—developed by HP Specialty Printing Systems’ (SPS)—enable original equipment manufacturers (OEMs) and ink partners to deliver primary package coding applications on substrates including flexible films and coated folding cartons. Since introducing the ink at Pack Expo 2013, HP has signed more than 25 OEM partners to test the HP 2580 solvent ink in various applications. Additionally, ink partners are using the HP 45si cartridge to print on a wider range of substrates with their proprietary inks.

“With the HP 45si technology and Collins ink, we’ll be able to address the needs of a large installed base that is tired of dealing with the spare parts and service costs of continuous inkjet printers,” said Chris Rogers, director, Sales and Business Development, Collins Inkjet.

The expanded HP Graphics Solutions portfolio will be on display at interpack, May 8-13, in HP stand C77, hall 13. More information is available in an online press kit at www.hp.com/go/HPatInterpack. Videos and updates on the new products are available on the HP for Designers Facebook page, the HP Graphic Arts YouTube channel and on Twitter using the #interpack hashtag.

EC rejects BJP’s charge of bias, says not afraid of anyone

      10052014

Unfazed by BJP’s attack, the Election Commission on Thursday rejected its accusations of bias in denying permission to Narendra Modi’s rally in Varanasi and made it clear that it was “not afraid of anyone, any political party or any entity” in doing its job.

At a hurriedly-called press conference in New Delhi, Chief Election Commissioner V S Sampath strongly defended the action of Varanasi Returning Officer Pranjal Yadav, saying his decision was based on “professional advice” and ruled out his removal as demanded by the BJP.

Flanked by other two Election Commissioners, Sampath expressed disappointment over BJP’s attack, saying “certain harsh and sweeping statements” were made and political parties to “show greater maturity”.

Sampath said the Returning Office, who is the District Magistrate of Varanasi, had denied permission to the rally proposed to be held today on the “basis of professional advice” and there was no need for the EC to “deviate” from it.

“When the security and suitability issues are involved, the Election Commission naturally will go by the professional advice taken at the district level,” the CEC said responding to attacks by BJP which staged protests here and in Varanasi.

“The competent local authority, the DM and his team, took the decision taking into consideration relevant professional advice on security,” he said.

“There is no reason to deviate from the decision taken at the district level, specially when the issue of life and security are concerned,” Sampath said.

Effectively rejecting BJP’s demand for removal of the DM who was accused of being partisan, he said, “as of today, we do not find the action faultworthy”.

He asserted that the Commission is “not afraid of anyone, any political party or any entity in discharging its duties”.

H S Brahma:Exit polls cannot be telecast before May 16.

      10052014

      Naresh Kumar Sagar

Media interaction of Election Commissioner H S Brahma at Indian Women Press Corps wherein he answered to various question directed by women journalist and Sr Journalist to Q on why this time Hate Politics is on rise due to various hate speeches by leaders of branded parties which were contained in last elections after strict action on Varun Gandhi hate speech were taken.EC HS Brahma replied that if you want us to send them show cause notice we shall do the same.Election Commissioner was more comfortable and happier in organizing this mega event rather than injecting discipline in political outfits and thus quotes that there are more than 1600 registered political parties but hardly two doz to be in active politics. Thus his stance perception is let the political parties evolve to their level and our action is to conduct free and fair elections.
Election Commissioner H S Brahma said the exit polls cannot be telecast before May 16.

“You are not supposed to conduct exit polls before May 16th– the counting day… We will not allow you to open your mouth before 16th evening,” he said during an interaction with Indian Women Press Corps.

“On the evening of 16th you can openly telecast the exit polls… Exit poll is only after counting. What is the hurry? Hardly, there are 150 hours (between May 12 and May 16),” he added.

Asked why the exit polls cannot be telecast before May 16, Brahma argued that there could be repoll in several places.

“What is the guarantee that you will have no repolling or countermanding of polls on 13th or 14th,” he said.

“The law is very clear. The exit poll is banned as per the law of the land. In 2010, we banned exit polls. As per the law of the land…No exit poll before 16th,” the Election Commissioner said.
A Gujarat police official, who was part of the Advance Security Liasion team of BJP Prime Ministerial candidate, had indicated that the chosen ground for holding the rally was not a desirable place for the VIP to attend, Election Commissioner H S Brahma said in New Delhi on Friday.
The Gujarat police official said it would not be possible to hold a rally at the venue as it was highly congested and complicated, Brahma said during an interaction with Indian Women Press Corps.
Modi, who is contesting from Varanasi, was to address the rally in Benia Bagh area of the city on Thursday but the district authorities denied permission citing security reasons.
Describing the permission issue as “purely an operational problem”, Brahma said, “You are entitled to take a decision under law. You have a right and duty to take a decision.”
However, at the same time, he said, “the person has a right to know yes or no… It should be communicated in an appropriate time. My only point is that there should be no delay in saying a yes or no.”
Terming the entire episode as unfortunate, the Commissioner said things should not have escalated to a level that it comes to the central poll Brahma said that since Varanasi was a VIP constituency and the authorities were dealing with a very important personality, the decisions should have been conveyed fast so that issues do not crop up.
The authorities should be prompt and quicken the process, he said, adding “if you take 20 minutes normally, you should, may be take 10 mins or 5 mins.”

BSP, Trinamool rule out support to BJP post-poll

      10052014
BSP, Trinamool rule out support to BJP post-poll
BSP chief Mayawati and Trinamool Congress on Friday dashed any hopes of a post-poll alignment with the BJP-led NDA, an option about which Narendra Modi had talked in an interview.
“BJP leader Narendra Modi in his recent interview had claimed that if needed he might seek support of AIADMK leader Jayalalithaa, TMC’s Mamata Banerjee and BSP national president…
“I want to make it clear that BSP will not extend any kind of support to Modi or NDA to form the government at any cost,” Mayawati told reporters in Lucknow on Friday.
Rejecting the possibility of a tie up with BJP, Trinamool Congress also said “if he says BJP’s doors are open for a Modi-led government, then we will use the same analogy to say that our doors are shut and the keys have been thrown away”.
Both were reacting to Modi’s comments in a television interview on Thursday night hinting at keeping the doors open for doing business with leaders like Jayalalithaa, Mamata Banerjee and Mayawati, notwithstanding strong attacks on them during the campaign.
However, there was no reaction from Chennai either from the Tamil Nadu chief minister or her party AIADMK.
In his interview, Modi said “Whatever I wanted to explain, I have. This can also be a tactic to keep the door open….I won’t explain it now but will do so after May 12.”
Mayawati told reporters that Modi’s statement betrayed nervousness on his part as the BJP has realised that it might not be able to form the government.
“When elections started, Modi was claiming that NDA will not require support of any other party. No party talks about taking support of any other party unless it is unsure of its victory…. The interview of Modi is a ploy to create confusion in the minds of minority community which is voting for us,” she said.
Trinamool spokesman Derek O’Brien said in Kolkata, “if the doors are open, then our doors are shut and the keys have been thrown away.”
He said the BJP’s claim of 372 was a “hallucination” and suggested the party may get 180 to 190 seats.
“The Congress can fit into a railway compartment with 72 seasts. The results are going to be very different. One thing is that Trinamool Congress will be third largest party in Lok Sabha,” he said.
O’Brien said leaders like Jayalalitha, Naveen Patnaik and Banerjee and “many like us will be the engine. It is time to wait till May 16.”
On Wednesday, Banerjee had ruled out supporting BJP or Modi in forming the government.
“The BJP will not get more than 160 seats and will not be able to form the government in Delhi. There is no question of backing you (the BJP) even if you beg,” she told a public meeting on the outskirts of Kolkata.
Mamata Banerjee on Friday continued her attack on Modi saying she would have sent Narendra Modi to jail had she been in Delhi.
The Congress, she claimed, was ‘cocooned in fear’ and did not have the guts to act against the BJP.
“They (Congress) have no guts. It is a party cocooned in fear. They survive through understanding and play got-up matches and indulge in match-fixing. Not a single word against Narendra Modi. It (Congress) is in head over heels in love with Narendra Modi,” Banerjee, the Trinamool Congress chief, told an election rally in Murshidabad district.
“Had I been in Delhi in place of Congress, I would have sent Narendra Modi to jail by tying a rope around his waist,” she said hitting out again at the BJP Prime Ministerial candidate for his remark that illegal Bangladeshi immigrants would be sent packing after 16th May.
Picking on what Modi said, his party leader Amit Shah said it does not believe in “political untouchability” and is open to support from any party.
“All parties are welcome to join the NDA if they want to give their support for development of this country,” he told reporters in Varanasi when asked to comment on Mayawati dismissing the possibility of backing BJP or Modi in government formation.

EC serves show cause notice to Rahul Gandhi

EC serves show cause notice to Rahul Gandhi for his remarks on Modi
The Election Commission on Friday issued a show cause notice to Congress vice president Rahul Gandhi for his remarks on Narendra Modi while addressing an election rally in Solan, Himachal Pradesh on 1st May.
In that rally Rahul Gandhi had reportedly said that if BJP comes to power it will lead to massacre of about 22 thousand innocents. The commission said that he prima facie violated the Model Code of Conduct and has asked him to respond to the notice by 12th May morning.
The show cause notice also referred to the provision which refrains parties and candidates making distorted or unverified allegations and limit their criticism to policies and programmes of rival parties.
The BJP had moved the EC against Gandhi for his remarks.
The Election Commission has also ordered further probe to ascertain whether Rahul Gandhi violated electoral law by entering the EVM area of polling booths during balloting in his constituency Amethi on Wednesday.
In another related news the election commission has sent a special observer for Varanasi till the electoral process gets over.
The Election Commission has appointed Pravin Kumar as special Observer for Varanasi Lok Sabha constituency with immediate effect.
Senior IAS officer Praveen Kumar from the Tamil Nadu cadre has been asked to reach Varanasi immediately to keep a close watch on election related preparedness and electoral process.

      Naresh:
It’s been almost a month since the terrorist group Boko Haram stormed a school in Nigeria and kidnapped hundreds of girls. Some have been forced to marry their abductors. Others have been trafficked into sex slavery, sold off for $12.
The U.S. government is sending military, intelligence, and law enforcement advisors to Nigeria to assist in the effort to rescue the girls. This is the right response to this horrific crime against humanity.
But the United States should also address the root causes of the crisis. Economic desperation and human rights abuses committed by Nigerian security forces have fueled the rise of Boko Haram.
The Pentagon should partner with State and USAID to support anti-corruption, rule of law, and police reforms. It should also ensure that the United States is not allying with people in the Nigerian security services who are complicit in the victimization of the kidnapped girls or other civilians.
      Sincerely,
      Brenda Bowser Soder

      Dear Friends,
The Indian Development Cooperation Research (IDCR) group at the Centre for Policy Research announces the launch of it’s new website: idcr.cprindia.org.
With a grant from the Asia Foundation, over the past two years, IDCR has been collating data and disseminating narratives on India’s growing development assistance program.
Indian development assistance has changed remarkably since its inception, shortly after India’s independence. Yet despite a large and rapidly growing development assistance program, there is little public understanding of the different grants and loans of which it is comprised.
With the launch of its new website, IDCR hopes to reach a wider audience and contribute to the public discourse surrounding India’s burgeoning development partnerships.
To learn more about the new website, browse through the attached flyer.

      With regards,
      Navroz Dubash

Clashes in eastern Ukraine ahead of vote

Pro-Russian separatists in eastern Ukraine will hold a referendum on Sunday to seek greater autonomy, despite calls by Russian President Vladimir Putin to put it off.
The separatists met on Thursday to discuss Putin’s request the previous day. Putin wants to pave the way for talks with the Kiev authorities.
The separatist leader in the eastern city of Donetsk, Denis Pushilin, told reporters after the meeting they had decided to go ahead with the referendum.
Ukraine’s military has been trying to evict armed pro-Russian separatists from public buildings they are occupying in Slavyansk and other eastern cities.
Civilians are among the many people on both sides that have been killed or wounded since fighting intensified on Friday last week.
Tensions are mounting in eastern Ukraine as 20 people have been killed ahead of a referendum scheduled for Sunday.

Pro-Russian groups plan to carry on with the referendum despite President Vladimir Putin’s call that it be postponed.

Ukraine’s interim government is stepping up its military offensive against pro-Russian separatists who continue to occupy local government buildings in eastern Ukraine.

On Friday, there was a gunfight in the southeastern city of Mariupol between the Ukrainian military and pro-Russian members who attempted to attack and seize police headquarters.

Footage from the city showed black smoke rising from the streets.

Ukrainian Interior Minister Arsen Avakov said 1 Ukrainian soldier and around 20 pro-Russians died in the gun battle.

The interim government unveiled plans to hold a national dialogue next Wednesday in response to calls being made by Russia and Western nations. But pro-Russian groups say there is no room for negotiation.

Syria to kick off presidential campaigns

      11052014
Syria’s presidential elections will officially kick off on May 11, Syria’s supreme constitutional court said on Saturday.
The court notified that the final three candidates for the presidential elections to start their campaigns from May 11 to June 2, a day ahead of the June 3 presidential vote.
Majed Khadra, the court’s spokesman, said the court had reviewed petitions filed by contenders who have been declared ineligible for candidacy last week, adding that the court’s decision hasn’t changed.
He repeated that only three out of the 24 runners for the elections were eligible for candidacy, namely Maher Abdul-Hafiz Hajjar, Hassan Abdullah al-Nouri and incumbent President Bashar al- Assad.
Maher Abdul-Hafiz Hajjar, a Syrian parliamentarian, was the first to submit application for the presidential elections. According to the state news agency SANA, Hajjar was born in Aleppo in 1968, hailing from a family well-known in religious teaching.
Meanwhile, Hassan Abdullah al-Nouri, 54, declared his candidacy for the June 3 elections a day after lawmaker Hajjar announced his bid for the top post.
Al-Nouri served as the minister of administrative development and minister of state for parliamentary affairs from 2000 to 2002. He also served as the general secretary of the Chamber of Industry from 1997 to 2000, and was a member of Syrian Parliament from 1998 to 2003.
Those two people, who haven’t been publicly known ahead of the elections, are now running against Assad, who was the seventh to register his candidacy.

      24th ASEAN Summit

      11052014
Bridging inequality, tackling regional disputes and pushing the Association for Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) forward on its integration deadline received focus at the 24th Summit that concluded here Sunday.
Myanmar President U Thein Sein, who hosted the summit, said a range of topics including the South China Sea, the Korean Peninsula, disaster relief and Middle East issues were discussed by the leaders during their retreat here.
This discussion also included multinational assistance for missing Malaysian Airlines flight MH370, the president said at a press conference after the leaders’ meeting, but without elaboration.
The main result of the summit was the adoption of the Nay Pyi Taw Declaration on Realization of the ASEAN Community in 2015, said the Myanmar president.
One of the most pivotal decisions to emerge from the summit was the focus on small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) as the prime mover of ASEAN’s post-2015 growth.
This is particularly relevant because while the ASEAN Secretariat insists that most countries have achieved around 80 percent of their implementation goals for the community, analysts point out some countries are not yet ready for the changes the ASEAN Community will bring, particularly for a planned economic liberalization that would reduce trade barriers.
The so-called CLMV countries — Cambodia, Laos, Myanmar and Vietnam — that joined the bloc in the 1990s risk being adversely affected because of their lack of preparedness and also by the comparative smallness of their economies when compared with other members such as Singapore and Indonesia.
As such focus on SMEs is especially important to achieve sustainable and inclusive growth within the bloc.
Promotion of disaster preparedness, humanitarian assistance and a balanced approach in expansion of relations with the regional bloc’s dialogue partners were also priorities in the ASEAN Community Post-2015 Vision as outlined by the Myanmar president.
Thein Sein insisted that his country’s chairmanship under the theme Moving Forward in Unity to a Peaceful and Prosperous Community was yet another indication that the country was dedicated to continuing democracy, peace and development. “The theme reflects Myanmar’s commitment to the ongoing democratization process and its reconciliation and the government’ s multi-faceted development objectives.”
He noted that Myanmar as the head of ASEAN will represent the members’interest at the G20 conference to be hosted by Australia in November.

IEC : ANC has won the 2014 general elections

      11052014
African National Congress (ANC) has won the 2014 general elections, thus securing President Jacob Zuma’s second term in office, the country’s Independent Electoral Commission (IEC) officially announced on Saturday.
The ANC received 249 seats in the National Assembly dropping 15 seats compared to the 2009 elections while the official opposition, the Democratic Alliance (DA) received 89 seats, and newcomers the Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF) received 25, the third highest number, IEC chairwoman Pansy Tlakula announced at the release of the final election results in Pretoria.
Among over 25 million registered voters, 73.43 percent voters turned out in 22,263 polling stations on Wednesday to elect the new National Assembly and provincial legislatures.
The 73.43 percent voter turnout during the general elections showed that democracy was thriving, Tlakula said.
“Today we celebrate two decades of democracy and conclude the fifth democratic national and provincial elections, we can confirm to the world democracy is well and thriving in this land,” she said.
The ANC has won a fifth consecutive success with a 62.16 percent share of the votes, down from the 65.9 it got in the 2009 elections. The leading opposition party DA won 22.22 percent up from 16.66 percent in 2009, achieving its best ever result comparing with previous elections, and the newly-formed Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF) won more than 1 million votes as 6. 35 percent.
The SA National Assembly consists of 400 members elected by proportional representation with a closed list approach. Two hundred members were elected from national party lists; the other 200 were elected from provincial party lists in each of the nine provinces.
The President of South Africa will be chosen by the National Assembly after the election. The premiers of each province will be chosen by the winning majority in each provincial legislature.
The 2014 general elections are the first since the death in December of Nelson Mandela, and also the fifth election since the end of the apartheid era in 1994

AAP open to supporting Third Front to stop BJP

      11052014

AAP open to supporting Third Front to stop BJP
The Aam Aadmi Party on Sunday did not rule out backing Third Front to stop BJP from coming to power, saying it may offer issue based support to a non-Congress secular dispensation.
With the marathon Lok Sabha elections wrapping up on Monday, senior AAP leader Gopal Rai said AAP will consider offering issue-based support to a Third Front government if such an initiative was launched based on election results which will be out on 16th May.
“Yes, we may extend issue based support if there is a situation that demands our support to a Third Front government,” Rai said.
The talk of possible cobbling together of secular forces to stop BJP from coming to power has gained momentum in the last couple of weeks with Samajwadi Party supremo Mulayam Singh Yadav and a number of other leaders exuding confidence of such a formation, expecting that Congress would not do well to form UPA-III.
Rai, considered close to AAP chief Arvind Kejriwal,, however, said a decision on future role of the party will be taken after analyzing the outcome of the election.
“Our movement is for common people and support will be definitely issue-based. Final decision on future course of action will be taken after May 16 when results will be declared,” he said.
AAP has fielded candidates in 422 Lok Sabha seats and Kejriwal had earlier claimed that his party will win at least 100 seats.
Rai, however, refused to hazard a guess about number of seats AAP would bag, saying the party’s struggle will go on even if it does not perform well.
The AAP had in a stunning victory in its electoral debut bagged 28 seats in Delhi Assembly elections in December last year and a number of senior party leaders said they will repeat the surprise in the Lok Sabha polls as well.
The party was hoping to perform well in Punjab, Haryana and Delhi.
“Our aim is to ensure that voice of honest politics reaches Parliament. It does not matter whether we win 10 seats or 30 seats. We will go there and try to build pressure to bring systemic changes,” Rai said.
Last week, CPI(M) leader Prakash Karat had said that a repeat of the 1996-like situation was possible and the Congress may be forced to support a government of secular parties at the Centre to keep the BJP out of power.
The front of non-Congress, non-BJP parties would be able to cobble up a majority with outside support from Congress, he said.
On Saturday, Bahujan Samaj Party leader Mayawati said her party will not join any front and her numbers will be enough to galvanise secular forces around her.
Few days back, Congress vice-president Rahul Gandhi had ruled out extending support to a Third Front government saying he was confident that Congress will have the numbers to form UPA III.
But Mulayam had hoped that Congress would support a Third Front government.
Rai said Arvind Kejriwal was confident of winning the mega contest against BJP’s Narendra Modi in Varanasi as there has been a yearning for change across the temple town.
“People want to see change in Varanasi. They have been supporting BJP and Congress for last so many decades but the elected representatives never cared for the city and that is why there has been a groundswell of support for AAP,” Rai said.
The presence of Modi and Kejriwal in the political battle in Varanasi has made the contest one of the most keenly watch fight of the 2014 Lok Sabha polls.
“Arvind Kejriwal has come out as an honest and credible face because of which he has been receiving massive support across Varanasi. This is a fight of two ideologies. Kejriwal represents honest politics while Modi backs corruption and interests of big corporate.
“If Kejriwal wins, then honest politics will move forward while if Modi emerges victorious, the politics of hatred, religion and corruption will continue,” he said.

Reliance has yesterday issued notice to the government seeking arbitration on the Gas Price issue. On the eve of the election results, Reliance now says that it is not happy with the price of $8.40/MMBTU notified by the government (which has been stayed for the time being by the election commission till the elections are over) and wants more. It seeks to get from gas fields owned by the people of India (for which Reliance is merely a contractor) a price equal to the price at which Gas is being imported into India in Refrigerated LNG ships (around 16$ as they claim).

In 2006, in its inititial Development plan, Reliance had promised that with a Capital Expenditure of 2.4 Billion Dollars, it would extract more than 6 Trillion Cubic Feet of Gas at an average rate of approximately 40 mmcmd  whose average cost would be a little over 1$ per MMBTU till 2022. Soon thereafter they revised this by saying that they should be allowed to increase the Capital expenditure to $8.8 Billion by promising that they will extract a total of 11 TCF of Gas at the rate of of approximately 80 mmcmd till 2022. Even here they projected their average cost of production of the gas as well under $2/MMBTU. That is why Reliance had itself offered to supply gas to NTPC at the rate of $2.34/MMBTU in 2006 for a period of 17 years. They would have made a substantial profit even at this price. Yet, a pliant government fixed the price at $4.2 in 2009 (for a period of 5 years) giving them windfall profits. Reliance sought to wriggle out of their contract with NTPC by stating that the government is free to fix any price in public interest since the Gas is owned by the government, an argument accepted by the Court.

In the succeeding years, the CAG has found Reliance guilty of grossly inflating their costs by overinvoicing and gold plating and squatting over the entire more than 7000 square Kilometers of the Gas Basin, though they were obliged to have surrrendered more than 90% of this by 2007. The Indian High Commission at Singapore had reported that a bogus, name plate company called Bio Matrix with virtually no equity or assets had invested 6,500 Crores in 4 companies owned exclusively by Mukesh Ambani, raising questions about whether this money was from that which had been siphoned out of the Gas fields. Despite this over invoicing and gold plating, Reliance has recovered even its inflated costs from the gas sales in the last 5 years. In addition to this, it has made an additional profit of $7.2 Billion by selling 30% of its participating interest in the fields to British Petroleum.

Most shockingly however, Reliance has in the last two years, dropped production steadily from the fields from a peak of 60 mmcmd to 8 mmcmd, prompting justified fears of hoarding of the gas. Reliance has stated in the Court proceedings that it is not economical for them to increase production beyond the present level at the price of $4.2.

In these circumstances, any honest government would have cancelled the contract, recovered the fields from Reliance, recovered the loss that they have caused to the government and prosecuted them for over invoicing by way of fraud, fabrication and cheating. But instead of doing this, the government allowed them to earn further windfall profits by increasing the price of gas to 8.40 despite the fact that the continued production cost of extraction of Gas from the existing wells is less than $.50. This would mean that Fertiliser and Power prices would increase by over 50%, and it would mean a transfer of over 50,000 crores annually from the public exchequer or from the pockets of the people to Reliance.

But now, in the vain hope that an even more pliable government could be on its way, Reliance has served arbitration notice seeking an even higher price. They seem to be confident that a future government may allow them an even higher price in collusive arbitration proceedings. After all, it was the Gujarat owned GSPC which has been asking the Central government to increase the price to $14.2. Mr. Modi has been conspicously silent on the issue of Gas price, even when he has been repeatedly asked to make clear his stand. We again demand that Mr. Modi should come clean on this issue.

There is no question of the Aam Aadmi Party extending support to any front after the declaration of the Lok Sabha election results and the party strongly refutes news reports attributed to it in this regard.
The AAP makes it absolutely clear that it has contested the Lok Sabha elections to present a model of alternative politics before the people of the country and any speculation about the party supporting any third or fourth front is completely misleading and contrary to the party’s stated position.
The AAP cannot and will not be a part of any front which could include parties whose leaders are involved in largescale corruption, neither will the AAP extend support to any such front.
The AAP will prefer to sit in opposition rather than be a part of extend support to any combination/front which compromises with corruption, since this is against the core values for which this party was formed.
The AAP appeals to the media to refrain from indulging in baseless speculation, since misinterpretation of facts leads to unnecessary confusion. The Press Trust of India (PTI) is a credible news organisation and the AAP hopes it will refrain from misquoting facts at this critical juncture.

Indian Election Circus: Will Regional Players be the new Ringleaders?

Indian Election Circus: Will Regional Players be the new Ringleaders?

Posted: 05/09/2014 2:28 pm EDT Updated: 05/09/2014 2:59 pm EDT
When the curtains finally come down on India’s “dance of democracy” on May 12, a whopping 814-million strong electorate would have cast their ballots across 543 constituencies in an explosive nine-phase, five-week long general election. These votes will essentially decide the fates (and in some cases, careers) of major national and regional leaders and parties–thereby making these elections one of the most politically charged battle royales in India’s recent history.
A deeply-layered and multi-dimensional exercise, the ongoing polls in India are being fought on a wide spectrum of factors: socio-economic development; caste, religious and linguistic diversity and individual personalities of leaders. However, these are all intrinsically linked with one crucial element: hope. As a popular grassroots theory goes, “Indian elections are a game of dreams, sold by candidates and parties. The winner is usually the one who offers the best dreams to the electorate!” . What is perplexing is that for most voters, the realisation of these dreams is immaterial–the only thing that matters is whether or not the dreams offer a glimmer of hope to a voter. And so, every five years, contesting parties and candidates attempt to woo the Indian voter with a torrent of promises–hollow promises, false promises, promises within promises and even promises of keeping promises!
This time around, the interplay of myriad hopes has created an electric election buzz unparalleled in recent history. Parties have gone into an overdrive of grandstanding, brand-building and support mobilisation with an intensity that almost equals voter frustration against scams, corruption and underdevelopment. Empowered with greater access to information than ever before, a large number of Indians cutting across social, regional and economic divides have found themselves bound in the invisible thread of elections together. At social gatherings across rural and urban India, engaging in poll-related discussions has emerged as the new national pastime. Opinions are being formed and cemented at the drop of a hat, and everyone is professing a new found love for psephology. And this inescapable exchange of views is being powered and shaped by the mainstream and social media.
This is also perhaps one of those rare instances, where the contest has been fought on a multitude of planks: communalism vs. secularism, growth vs social development; wave of change vs status quo; inclusive governance vs divisive politics, among others. The presence of powerful regional satraps, and the intense slugfest between the Bharatiya Janata Party’s Narendra Modi and Congress’ Gandhi Family has clearly split the national voter base–a trend testified by casual interactions in political constituencies. The slow but steady rise of Aam Aadmi Party’s Arvind Kejriwal has also made this a potentially game-changing potboiler. But who will have the last laugh on May 16?
“Yeh public hai, sab jaanti hai” (The public knows everything) goes a popular Indian refrain–and therein lies the answer. Whispers on the ground indicate that the BJP–despite the much hyped Modi wave–and the Congress are facing a tough fight from AAP and regional players. Despite riding on the prevailing wave of public disillusionment with the Congress, Modi and his associates have been unable to get rid of the 2002 Gujarat pogrom taint, and are viewed with a communal prism by the minority community and the civil society. This has caused palpable unease among BJP’s allies, who may be hesitant in extending support to a Modi-led regime in case the BJP fails to get majority.
Then there is the Congress, which has been fighting a crisis of legitimacy in the wake of multi-billion dollar scams, inflation and weak governance since the last couple of years. On the other hand, the Aam Aadmi Party, which has made inroads in several urban and rural centres, is receiving credible public attention as it fights its first national election. Though doubts have been raised on the extent to which the party has captured public imagination, there is a growing acknowledgment that the AAP may have garnered a significant number of votes–especially from first-time electors– in strongholds of other parties in India’s hinterlands, primarily because of its “clean image.”
Differences of opinions notwithstanding, there is consensus among a cross section of academics, voters, journalists and political experts on three distinct aspects: one, that the Congress will lose many of its seats and find itself considerably weaker than ever before. Two, the BJP will gain ground, but not enough to emerge as the single largest party, despite its much-publicised “Modi wave” campaign. Three, the AAP will make a significant debut, but not enough to make a dent at the national stage.
If this scenario were to come true, the outcome would then be decided by India’s regional parties–SP, BSP, AIADMK, DMK, TMC, JDU, RJD and the Left. Since not many parties are expected to back Modi as the Prime Minister, the BJP would either need to replace him with a consensus candidate, or allow its potential allies to flock to the UPA instead. At the end, the elections may yet again mark a victory for the regional parties, who will enjoy a significantly increased bargaining power with the new government.
If independent ground reports are to be believed, these regional parties–who possess a tremendous support base in their states–will emerge as the key ringleader of the great Indian election circus, and continue India’s tryst with coalition politics. The only question is: can India afford multiple centers of power in its quest for strong governance, inclusive development and higher growth?

      ABOUT PORTUGUESE CUISINE
The food in Portugal is a closely guarded secret.Portuguese cuisine has everything to please even the most discerning palate because it is based on genuine quality products, cooked according to traditional recipes or to the most innovative and unusual trends.
The most distinctive feature of Portuguese cuisine comes from the sea. As you enjoy a simple grilled fish, always fresh like the seafood that abounds   from  end to end
along the coast, you can be sure that you are in Portugal!
We might say that Portuguese cuisine hinges around into five icons. Let’s start with the fish from our extensive Atlantic coast.
FISH: The Best Fish In The World And Marvellous Seafood
Many of Portugal’s dishes are fish-based due to the country’s situation on the Atlantic. The most famous fish dish is salted codbacalhau, which it is said can be cooked in 365 different ways. Other popular fish include sardines, especially grilled (sardinhas assadas), sea bassoctopus, squid (often stuffed), anchovies and swordfishShellfishsuch as mussels, prawns, oysters, lobsters, crabs and clams are also very popular.
Meat: A common meat dish is the cozido a Portuguesa, a sort of hotpot of beef, sausages, potatoes, vegetables and rice. Grilled skewers of beef  with  garlic
(espetada) are often served, as is aromatic grilled chicken (frango grelhado), seasoned with piri piri, garlic and olive oil. Feijoada, a meat stew with kidney or butter beans, is a dish popular throughout Portugal.
Cheeses: The most famous cheese in Portugal is most probably the Queijo da Serra, made from ewe’s milk in the Serra da Estrela. This cheese is made   in  the  winter  and
traditionally the milk is coagulated with thistle (flor do cardo). Monte, a cheese from Trs-os-Montes in northern Portugal, is a smooth, creamy cheese made from cow’s and ewe’s milk.
Desserts: Portuguese sweets are divine. A popular dessert is the arroz doce, a rice pudding flavored with cinnamon and lemon. The Portuguese have a variety of cake   and   confectionary
specialties that can be found in a pasteleria or confeitaria. The result of the balance between flavour, creaminess and crispiness is another icon of Portuguese cuisine, considered a truly heavenly sweet: the pastel de nata (custard tart)!
Wine: Each dish is matched to the right wine. The whole country produces wine and, while Port wine is famous, the Douro, Alentejo and many other table wines are no less superior.

      FOOD DELIGHTS OF EACH REGION
      IN PORTUGAL
LISBON: From grilled sardines to pasteis de Belem(custard tarts), the food in Lisbon is as appealing as the city and the region.
As for sweets, the temptations around the capital are many and by themselves justify the trip: walnuts in Cascais, at the end of the attractive Estoril Coast; queijadas (cheese
tarts) and travesseiros (eggand almond pastries) in Sintra, and fofos (cream-filled sponge cakes) in Belas, when you cross the Tagus to the south, you will find the Azeitao tortas (egg cream-filled rolls).
The Pasteis de Belem have become a true icon of tourism: each day more than 10,000 pasteis are sold, accompanied with sugar and cinnamon, packed into packets along with the boxes of pasteis. To go to Lisboa and not eat Pasteis de Belem is a crime.
PORTO AND THE NORTH: The rich sauce of ‘Francesinha’is a must, a combination of bread, steak, smoked and fresh sausage and cheese. This Porto speciality is a firm local favourite. A visit to Porto almost always involves a taste of a “francesinha” and a “Tripas a Moda do Porto” dish.
And to accompany such delicious food come the wines of the Douro. The course of this northern river is dotted with the finest vineyards, and there is nowhere better than Porto to try some excellent local wine.
CENTRO DE PORTUGAL: TryBairrada suckling pig accompanied by a regional sparkling wine. The coastline provides fresh   shellfish  and
fish, often served up as ‘caldeirada’ stews and the bread based ‘ensopado’.
Of the sweets, we would suggest the eggy sweet ‘ovos moles de Aveiro’ and ‘pao-de-lo de Ovar’ sponge cake. Both are certain crowd pleasers.
MADEIRA: You must try traditional regional dishes like tuna steak and fried cornbread or the deliciousgrilled beef on a laurel spit accompanied with sweet potatoes bread “bolo do caco”.
Fruit lovers will really think they are in heaven!
Tropical fruits like mangoes, bananas, avocadoes, custard apples and passion fruits are abundant and their exotic flavours are the perfect end to a
meal, either fresh or in a pudding, mousse or ice cream.
AZORES: Gourmets delight in the many traditional recipes of Azorean cuisine.
Grilled, in bouillabaisses orsoups, fishis cooked in a variety of ways. But make sure you taste tuna which, in these waters, has a pink hue and a soft flavor. The Azores
have seafood that is not found anywhere else, such as limpetsbarnacles and locust lobsters, a kind of tender and tasty lobster which is almost a sin not to try.
ALGARVE: Start with what the ocean provides. Seafood: clams, oysters, donax clams and cockles cooked on a griddle or in a frying pan are delicious.
Some plain barnacles on a beach on the Vicentina coast, razor clam rice, whelk bean stew, clam xerem (stew with maize meal) and seafood acorda (bread casserole) are
other examples to make the mouth water.
ALENTEJO:The Alentejo has some of the best gastronomy in Portugal. In the region’s restaurants you can taste: fish, either grilled or in soups, sea food, “acordas”(bread stews),
whelks with pork, gaspacho (a tomato-based raw vegetable soup) , mutton stew, game meat dishes, cheeses, sausages, bread, olive oil, wines and convent sweetmeats.
KNOW MORE ABOUT OLIVE OIL IN PORTUGAL
With a fruity, slightly thick aroma, golden or greenish yellow in colour, bitter, spicy or sweeter, mild or intense, this is Portuguese olive oil.
Olive oil is one of the base elements of Portuguese gastronomy and culture and it is one of the responsibles for the healthy nature of Mediterranean influence cuisine.
The olive oils from Porto e North (Tras os Montes) are intense ones and with unique features when compared to those grown in other regions, just because they use different kinds of olives. The olive oils of Alentejo (NorthernAlentejo, Inner Alentejo and Moura) are also very exquisite in terms of flavor.
TIP: Try a ‘Tiborna’, warm bread dipped in olive oil, with which olive oil route visits often end.

BJP likely to gain 200 plus seats in Lok Sabha

      11052014

BJP likely to gain 200 plus seats in Lok Sabha
Loss to Congress will be gain to BJP
      ASHOK B SHARMA*
Nation eagerly awaits the conclusion of the final phase of the polls on May 12 and thereafter the announcement of the results four days later. Already the writing on the wall is clear – people want change. Picking up the thread several opinion polls have begun speculating the numbers.

The Congress party, facing anti-incumbency due to allegations of corruption, mal-administration and not being able to check rising prices and unemployment, is likely to reduce its strength. By how much is the real question? Will the loss to the INC mean gain for BJP?

In 2009 polls, the Congress gaining 206 seats could lead the UPA-II coalition in the 543-member house. Among states, its major support base was from Andhra Pradesh where it won 33 out of 42 seats. In 2004 polls also, the Congress won 29 seats that pushed the party to get 145 seats and lead the UPA coalition. This was possible due to the popularity of the then Chief Minister YS Rajashekhara Reddy

But unfortunately, the party is unlikely to repeat its victory card this time in Andhra Pradesh. The tragic death of YSR Reddy came as a setback to the Congress. The party refused to pass on the mantle to his son Jagan who broke away and formed the YSR Congress. The subsequent Congress leadership in the state, riddled with factionalism, could not live up to the expectations of the people. Added to this the bifurcation of the state engineered by UPA-II has left the people of Seemandhra region unhappy. In Seemandhra region which has 25 seats, the Congress is likely to fare miserably. In this region TDP which has alliance with BJP and also the YSR Congress stand to gain. In Telangana, which has 17 seats, the TRS is likely to gain at the expenses of the Congress.

Next to undivided Andhra Pradesh, Congress garnered 21 seats in UP followed by 20 in Rajasthan in 2009 polls. These scores were impressive as compared to 2004 polls when the Congress secured 9 seats in UP and 4 seats in Rajasthan. Other states were the Congress scored in double digits in 2009 were Maharashtra (17), Kerala (13) and Madhya Pradesh (12). But this magic is unlikely to be repeated at 2014 polls. In UP the BJP has put up an aggressive campaign to gain maximum seats out of the total 80 in the state. In Rajasthan, recently the BJP’s Vasundhara Raje took over as Chief Minister routing Congress and gaining two-third majority. Similarly, MP voted back the BJP Chief Minister Shivraj Chauhan to power and in Maharashtra where Congress is the ruling party is facing anti-incumbency factor.

In this situation it seems likely that the Congress is likely to lose around 100 out 206 seats it had gained in the 2009 general elections.

The moot question is which party is likely to gain at the expense of the Congress? The general mood of the people is for a stable national alternative. The BJP has come clear by forming a coalition of parties called the National Democratic Alliance (NDA) and projecting the Gujarat Chief Minister Narendra Modi as its prime ministerial candidate with an development agenda.

The BJP has the record of winning 182 seats on its own in 1999 polls that bounced back Atal Bihari Vajpayee as prime minister of NDA coalition. The Congress tally stood at 114, after losing 23 seats it had won in 1998.

States like UP with a total of 80 seats, Maharashtra with a total of 48 seats and Bihar with a total of 40 seats are crucial for BJP if it intends to cross the barriers of 200 in Lok Sabha. BJP has the record of gaining 50 plus seats from in UP in three consecutive polls in 1991, 1996 and 1998 riding on Ram Mandir and Hindutva wave, highest being 57 in 1998. But in 1999 when the party won a maximum of 182 seats in Lok Sabha, its count from UP declined to 29.

However, in 2014 polls, the BJP has set up candidates on basis of its social engineering The BJP’s prime ministerial candidate Narendra Modi’s aggressive campaign and his project of development agenda seem to have gone well with the people and the party is expected to be a front runner with good number of seats.

In Bihar, the BJP which is competing with Lalu Yadav’s RJD is expected to get about 20 seats. In Maharashtra where the Congress-NCP alliance is likely to shrink to 15 seats, the BJP and its alliance partners will be the ultimate gainers.

Other major gains for BJP can come from Gujarat, Rajasthan, Madhya Pradesh, besides gains from other parts of the country. In all likelihood, it seems that BJP is likely to gain 200 plus seats in the overall tally in the Lok Sabha. The Congress tally is likely to be around 100. The loss to the Congress will be gain for BJP.

      ‘Forest, Livelihood and Development:
      A comparative study of the
experience of two ‘’Progressive’’ Laws, Panchayat Extension to Scheduled Areas (PESA) and Forest Rights Act (FRA)’

      by

      Dr. Kamal Nayan Choubey,

      Abstract:
In post liberalization era two contradictory phenomena emerged in India’s forest areas. In these areas the process of privatization of resources increased but forest dwelling communities have vehemently resisted this process. A large part of this resistance has been related to struggle for ‘better’ or ‘progressive’ laws. In post 1990 era two such laws have been enacted for these areas. One is Panchayat (Extension to Scheduled Areas) Act 1996 (PESA) and the other is Scheduled Tribes and Other Traditional Forest Dwellers (Recognition of Forest Rights Act) 2006 (or Forest Rights Act or FRA).  PESA extends 73rd constitutional amendment to the Schedule V areas and makes important provisions for the autonomous Gram Sabhas in these areas. FRA, on the other hand, is related to forest areas of the whole country and gives individual property rights over ‘encroached’ forest land and community property rights over forest land and its resources. It also makes important provisions for the conservation of wildlife. These laws are commonly termed as ‘progressive’ laws because tribal groups waged a long struggle for these laws and apparently got some crucial rights over the affairs of their villages (particularly in PESA) along with forest land and its resources (in both PESA and FRA). This paper attempts to probe that in post-liberalization era, when we see an inclination in the government’s policies to hand over the natural resources of forests to corporate capital, how can we evaluate and comprehend the experience of PESA and FRA, which give local communities rights over forest land and its resources? Can we say that through these laws state has found a tool to control forest areas and make population of these areas more legible? Have these laws given local communities rights over their livelihood sources or work as a tool to make the process of handing over forest resources to corporate capital easier?  Or like people’s movement we should also accept that both these laws could undo all ‘historic injustices’?  This paper presents its arguments at three levels: first, it presents an introduction of both these laws and analyzes their general experiences; second, it underlines through some case studies how local communities are using these laws to resist state imposed development and also trying to create an autonomous space for themselves. At the third level, the paper proposes the idea of ‘Marginal Society’ and ‘legalism for below’ to describe the experiences of both these laws.  The speaker argues that due to the activities of grassroots organizations and Maoists and their day to day experience with state, people of forest areas (and most of Schedule V areas) have realized the significance of law in their life and hence demanded for ‘better’ laws, which could ensure their rights over forest land and resources. They are also using these laws to oppose state imposed ‘development’ model. State on its part, adopted the strategy to give minimum possible rights to these communities or even after giving rights through laws, state is not implementing them seriously or putting hurdles to their proper implementation. This paper proposes that though the experience of both PESA and FRA is less than satisfactory, nevertheless one can easily find that the struggle for the enactment and implementation of these laws have increased the political consciousness of many local communities and many local groups are using these laws as a tool for their struggle to preserve livelihood resources in their control.

      Speaker:
Dr. Kamal Nayan Choubey teaches in the Department of Political Science, Dayal Singh College, University of Delhi, Delhi and is currently a Junior Fellow, Nehru Memorial Museum and Library.

AAP X-rayed : Kejriwal in race for muscle and money power

      12052014
      ashokbsharma2
      ASHOK B SHARMA*
Indian democracy is faced with a challenge of electing leaders with a clean image. Over the years criminalization of politics has almostreached its nadir. The judiciary has tried its best to bring the political system to order by pronouncing several verdicts and ensuring the provisions of the Representation of Peoples Act 1951 are not violated in any manner. The judiciary has from time to time sent necessary directives to the Election Commission.
Born out of the movement led by Anna Hazare for cleansing public life in the country, the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) led by Arvind Kejriwal tookup the initiative for providing the people of a dream alternative.
The party assumed power in Delhi after the assembly elections with the support of the Congress. The AAP government resigned within 49 days on the pretext that both the Congress and the BJP were not allowing it to function in the way it liked. AAP made several promises to the Delhi people, including scaling down the high water and electricity tariffs and others which the government could have down on its own without seeking the support of either the BJP or the Congress on the floor of the House. But Kejriwal resigned without fulfilling a single promise.
Instead he sought the support of the BJP and the Congress to introduce and pass the controversial Jan Lokpal and Swaraj Bills without goingthrough the mandated legal and constitutional procedures. As both the Congress and the BJP did not agree, Kejriwal resigned and sought to invoke public sympathy.
After resigning from the chief ministership of Delhi, Kejriwal put up AAP candidates in several parts of the country in 2014 parliamentary polls. But his promise to provide a clean alternative to the country’s
political system seems to be an eyewash.
A survey conducted by an independent think tank Association for Democratic Reforms (ADR) has exposed the hollowness of Kejriwal’s tallclaims. The ADR has analysed the affidavits filed by 8163 out of 8230 independent candidates and candidates of several political parties in the fray in 2014 parliamentary elections.  About 15% of AAP candidates (65 in numbers) have criminal cases filed against them.  Out of them 10% are battling in courts against serious criminal cases filed
against them. AAP candidates are facing charges relating to murder, attempts to murder, crime against women, charges of creating communal disharmony, robbery and dacoity, kidnapping.
Some of the serious criminal charges, if proved, may amount to imprisonment up to five years or more. Some of the offences are non-bailable in nature. About 42 AAP candidates have confessed have serious criminal cases pending against them.
It seems that AAP has followed the path of other political parties by relying upon muscle power, instead of providing a clean alternative that it founder Kejriwal and his mentor Anna Hazare had promised time and again to the people.
In the race for use of money power in polls, AAP is not much behind. About 45% of AAP candidates (192 in numbers) are wealthy people called Crorepatis. About 115 (27%) out of 427 AAP candidates occupy the top three highest assets positions in their constituencies. To cite a few examples, AAP candidate from Bangalore central V Bala Krishnan  has adeclared asset of Rs 1,89,42,53,519, AAP candidate from Mumbai South Meera Ashish Sanyal has declared asset of Rs 50,94,61,553, AAP candidate for Darbhanga Lok Sabha seat in Bihar, Prabhat Ranjan Das has a declared asset of Rs 36,46,42,463, AAP candidate from Tiruppur in Tamil Nadu R Chakravarthi Raja Gopala Krishnan has a declared asset of Rs 32,59,25,000 and AAP candidate from Ghaziabad in UP Shazia Ilmi Malik has a declared asset of Rs 30,33,42,609.  According to ADR survey 109 AAP candidates have not filed their Income Tax Returns.
AAP has moved away from its declared concept of Aam Aadmi (common man) for whose interests it had pledged to fight against injustice. The party leaders live in luxury apartments and bunglows in posh colonies. They dress themselves in costly suits and attires and not in dhoti-kurta, the dress of the country’s common man – the real Aam Aadmi.
The party has enough funds to pay its full-time and part-time volunteers. Funds are flowing from foreign countries and AAP says that these funds are contributions from non-resident Indians (NRIs) abroad. The situation raises several eyebrows. Every year, on the occasion of Pravasi Bharatiya Divas, the government had been making appeals to NRIs and Overseas Indians to investment in Indian economy, individually or by pooling in their resources. But the NRI investment in Indian economy had not been that encouraging, though their remittances to their family remained high. It is difficult to believe that NRIs who are shying to invest their hard earned money in Indian economy would fund a political party like AAP in a big way.
But AAP leaders have been careful in showing their poll expenses within the limits fixed by the Election Commission at Rs 14 lakhs. In the last 2013 Delhi Assembly elections, the average election expense declared by six ministers was Rs 8.07 lakh. AAP leader Girish Soni had shown highest election expense at Rs 12,53 lakh, followed by Rakhi Birla at Rs 11.65 lakh, Jarnail Singh at Rs 11.64 lakh, Harish Khanna at Rs 10.97 lakh, Jagdeep Singh at Rs 10.88 lakh, Sanjeev Jha at Rs 9.96 lakh. Arvind Kejriwal has shown a low poll expenditure at Rs 3.99 lakh followed by Ashok Kumar from Ambedkar Nagar constituency at Rs 3.78 lakh.
It is clear that AAP has moved away from its pledge to cleanse the Indian political system. It is very much in the race for both muscle and money power.

WASH for School Program to be Scaled Up across 400 schools in Assam

      12052014
Group Handwashing with Soap before Mid-day Meals
Guwahati: A high level team consisting of the Axom Sarba Siksha Abhiyan (SSA) Mission, Govt. of Assam and UNICEF  visited   rural primary schools in Kamrup district, Assam, today  to review the strategic  intervention of Group Handwashing with Soap before  mid-day meals.

As part of the  DHaAL  (Daily Handwashing for an Ailment-free Life ) – Fit for School  project, team members had an opportunity to see the low-cost and high impact innovations demonstrating group handwashing with soap before mid-day meals. These are being implemented  as a part of Water, Sanitation and Hygiene (WASH) in Schools initiative.

“We visited Sajjanpara Lower Primary School under Rani Block and Dahali Lower Primary School under Rampur block in Kamrup district to review the progress of the WASH programme initiated two years ago. So far we have covered 100 schools and plan to scale it up to 320 more government  schools,” said Dr.Tushar Rane, Chief of Field Office, UNICEF Assam.

Mr. Harkirat Singh, Managing Director, Woodland was also part of the team.  The company’s Corporate Social Responsibility wing ’Proplanet’  has been supporting WASH (Water, Sanitation and Hygiene) in Schools programme of UNICEF since 2011 and has raised over 1.25 crore  rupees towards the programme.

“UNICEF has been a strong partner to our sustainability initiative ‘ProPlanet’ and both of us have worked together over the last few years. We have nurtured a community of ProPlaneteers who are concerned about the environment and through them, we have touched the lives of many vulnerable communities,” said Mr Singh.

The corporate partnership has helped reach out to over 20,000 children across the country over the past three years and sets the way forward for similar corporate engagement initiatives supporting access to safe drinking water and sanitation for children in schools.

The delegation interacted with teachers, School Management Committees, students, mothers’ group during the field visit and were accompanied by  Sarva Shiksha Abhiyan, Assam team working under the WASH in Schools component of Child Friendly Schools and Systems Programme.

Interacting with the teachers, Mr. Murat Sahin, Global Advisor, WASH in Schools, UNICEF, New York, said, “ The visit to these schools show how integrating critical behaviours such as hand washing,  into the world’s largest Mid-Day meals program can bring amazing results for children.”

Functional WASH infrastructures in schools have a far reaching impact,  enabling children to internalize related behaviours and influence their families and communities to adopt hygienic practices. Moreover, diseases such as diarrhoea, intestinal worms and respiratory infections lead to school absenteeism, increased drop-out rates and impact on children’s physical and cognitive development as well as education attainment.

The visiting team also reviewed other key  WASH in School interventions being implemented under the Right of Children to Free and Compulsory Education (RTE) Act, 2009. These include three  crucial components viz.  availability of safe drinking water,  good quality functional toilets for girls and boys, and  handwashing.

Rs. 3.25 crore raised until now for more than 75 NGOs through TCS World 10K Bangalore 2014

Single largest platform raising charity in Bangalore - Rs. 14 crore raised since the event’s inception in 2008

      PRESS RELEASE                                                                      May 12, 2014

Across the world, long distance running events present themselves as leading avenues to help raise funds benefiting various causes and innumerable individuals year after year. The movement has proved true in India too, where Procam International promoted distance-running events have emerged the largest and most respected charity raising platforms in the cities in which they are conducted. The TCS World 10K Bangalore, in the last six editions, has seen the citizens of Bangalore responding in champion fashion to the charity drive associated with the event.

Thus far, the run has helped raise much needed funds of over Rs. 14 crore in seven years, becoming the single largest platform raising charity in Bangalore.

In its seventh edition, there are early indications that the figures raised will exceed what has been collected in all previous years, with INR 3.25 crore already accounted for, benefiting more than 75 NGOs. The 2014 edition will witness 43 corporates with 53 teams, over 350 charity fundraisers and more than 7500 donors.

This was announced by Murray Culshaw, Chairman Bangalore Cares, the official Charity Partner of the TCS World 10K Bangalore 2014, along with  Dilip Jayram, CEO, Procam International.

Also present at the Press Conference were individuals who have worked tirelessly to raise money for charity and shared they inspiring stories with audiences. These included 14-year-old Nimit Bataviya the youngest fund raiser, Chip Kingery, Founder of proVISION Asia, Nina Nayak, Social worker and a Care Champion Gold, Muniswamy S, a wheelchair bound Care Champion, and Hemanshu Desai, CEO, New India Electricals.

Speaking on the occasion Muniswamy S, a wheelchair bound Care Champion, said, “I work for proVISION Asia’s Mithra Special Needs School and other projects where I am an Ability Connection Coordinator. I have been raising funds to support children with Mental Retardation and Cerebral Palsy (MR&CP) from special schools. This is my third year of raising funds. I was able to raise INR 10,000 the first year and 50,000, the second. I am extremely happy to announce that this year I have raise above INR 100,000 and can’t wait to help provide better value to the children.”

Nimit Bataviya, the youngest fundraiser, said, “I cannot see people in pain and turn a blind eye, so I first called my parents, friends and relatives and urged them to donate whatever little they could to start off with. Afterwards a few friends and I sold chocolates and old newspapers to be able to raise the best we could to give back to society. I dream of a happy society and in the words of W.B. Yeats, in dreams begin responsibilities.”

Murray Culshaw, Chairman Bangalore Cares, said, “It is not easy to raise funds, even if it is a cause you believe in whole heartedly. It is large-hearted companies such as Procam International and kindhearted people who make marathons happen that enable NGOs to support people who need our nurturing. I am extremely happy to say that this year we have already collected INR 3.25 crore and the figure is expected to rise to INR 4 crore by the end of the TCS World 10K Bangalore 2014. There are very few organizations that NGOs can go to with their issues, and we at Bangalore Cares vouch to be that aid for NGOs for as long as we can.”

The CEO Dash, which is also part of the charity, has received participation from over 10 corporate honchos from companies who have fielded their teams in the Corporate Care.

Bangalore Cares has been associated with the TCS World 10K Bangalore since inception and is working persistently to encourage individuals and reach out to more and more NGOs to ensure increased participation for the betterment of society. Each year, they have witnessed a positive change in the mindset of people not only in Bangalore but from across the country who are coming forward to support various causes and run for a reason.

This year too, individual fundraising is leading the way with an increased number of individuals taking up the challenge of fundraising for an NGO they care about.

The involvement of Corporate Bangalore has also increased substantially from last year. The charity-raising module is facilitated, coordinated and monitored by Bangalore Cares. NGOs who raise funds through the event give a utilization report for the funds raised.
